What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic Violence is;

'any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.'

The Home Office acknowledges that Domestic Abuse includes specific forms of harm which impact on Black Minority Ethnic women and which may among others include forced marriage, dowry related abuse, female genital mutilation and honour based Domestic Abuse.

Domestic violence should be seen as a pattern of controlling and abusive behaviour, such as degradation, humiliation, deprivation, social isolation, constant criticism and belittling, in which the abuser seeks power over the victim.
