Homeless Services
We will offer advice and assistance to all homeless people in their search for accommodation. If you are looking for home you may find some useful information here.
In certain circumstances we are under a duty to ensure a homeless person has accommodation. This duty applies to vulnerable homeless people, which is defined as:-
- Families with dependent children;
- Pregnant women;
- Young people;
- Those who are old or unwell.
- People who are vulnerable as a result of leaving prison or the armed forces.
- People leaving care.
We will take four factors in account for decisions on homeless applications:-
- Is the applicant homeless?
- Is the applicant vulnerable?
- Is the applicant intentionally or unintentionally homeless?
- Does the applicant have a local connection with this area?
We have produced an information leaflet to provide advice and assistance for anyone who is homeless or threatened with homelessness. You can view our homeless leaflet here.
You can find out more details of the duties towards homeless people in the Governments Code of Guidance.
If you would like to make an application for housing as a homeless paerson you can obtain a Homeless Application Form here.
Homelessness Strategy
Under the Homelessness Act 2002 every Council must publish its homelessness strategy and review it every three years.
The Homelessness Strategy explains how the Council and its partners including Blyth Valley Housing will tackle the problems of homelessness in the Borough including:
- The prevention of homelessness
- Ensuring there is sufficient accommodation available for people who are, or who may become homeless
- Ensuring there is satisfactory support for people who are, or who may become homeless or who need support to prevent them from becoming homeless again.
You can view the Council's Homelessness Strategy for 2003 here.
Getting Help
If you are homeless or just looking for accommodation we think you will find the following information helpful.
We have provided a list of contacts and links below to help you find the sort of accommodation you are looking for quickly.
We would advise anyone considering renting accommodation to satisfy themselves of the safety of gas and electrical fixtures and appliances. By law the landlord must provide you with a gas safety certificate for the property. The electrics should be checked for safety at each change of tenancy.
For houses in multiple occupation the owner should be able to show you a safety certificate from the Fire Officer.
If you would like to discuss your housing situation with someone in person why not call into one of the Yourlink offices.
You can visit our Homefinder website and bid for available properties if you are already registered with us.
You can also check out our other vacancies at Available Homes.
